The word perfume is derived from the Latin ""per fumum"", which means through smoke. Perfumery (the art of making perfumes), began in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt but was developed and further refined by the Persians and the Romans. Although perfume and perfumery also existed in East Asia, much of its fragrances are incense based. Initially perfume was considered to be a luxury; women were hired to produce perfumes in the backyard of the houses of rich people. Ancient techniques of making perfumes included the usage of bark, twigs and lease, fruits, seeds, woods and various other organic products, but in the initial stages of the perfume making art no flowers were used to manufacture perfume. As the time passed new techniques were adapted to make perfumes. There was an addition to the elements used to manufacture perfumes. Chemical elements such as alcohol and various other synthetically produced elements were used to produce perfumes. Even after the discoveries in the art of making perfumes Arabs still use the traditional methods to make perfume (called attar in Arabic). Wearing perfumes is an art in itself. One should chose perfumes that suits them, not their friends or families. Perfumes should be applied to the pulse points such as the folds in the crook of your elbow and back of knees, wrist, neck and cleavage. Do not rub your wrist together because it crushes the smell. Spraying the perfume in the air is also very good if you walk straight into the perfume because it helps to diffuse perfume in your body. Do not simply apply to the neck always work up the body as the scent rises. During the last few decades the perfume industry has seen growth at a very high rate and has now become one of the most dominant industries of the world. Big names in the perfume industry are spending millions to come up with a unique fragrance every short interval of time so that they can meet the demand and live up to the expectations of the consumers.
