Drug interactions and side effects of Cialis

To achieve and sustain erections, men need to have a healthy central nervous system which co-ordinates the brain, spinal cord and the penis, healthy arteries in and around the corpora cavernosa, adequate level of nitric oxide in the penis, healthy smooth muscle and fibrous tissue within the corpora cavernosa. Erectile dysfunction is the result of not meeting any of the above listed. Older men contact ED mainly because of the age-related diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart diseases, angina and others. Other reason stated is that nitric oxide production decreases as men age and also there is a decline in the compliance of the tissues in the corpora cavernosa.

Let us now see how each of them cause ED. Diabetes mellitus signals the onset of ED atleast 10-15 years earlier than healthy men. The chief cause is due to the early onset of atherosclerosis which narrows down the arteries and thereby the blood flow to the penis. Diabetes also causes ED due to a condition called diabetic neuropathy which damages the sensory and autonomic nerves. Some men tend to develop ED because of myopathy, a decrease in the compliance in the muscles in corpora cavernosa. Diabetes along with obesity, poor control of blood glucose levels, cigarette smoking, make for a deadly combination to bring ED.

Hypertension of high blood pressure is also one of the culprits for erectile dysfunction. Arteriosclerosis or essential hypertension contribute much to ED. Essential hypertension is called so because it doesn’t need any kind of disease for its onset. It comes on it own. Patients with hypertension have lower production of nitric oxide in the arteries of the body and even in the penis, which makes erection unachievable.

Heart diseases are caused mainly due to atherosclerosis, a condition in which the arteries of the body narrow down or harden decreasing the blood flow. Diabetes, hypertension, smoking, high cholesterol levels aggravate the situation. Men with atherosclerosis tend to have narrow arteries, thereby increasing their chance of a heart attack or angina. Men with narrow coronary arteries also tend to have narrow arteries within their penis too.

Nerve damages due to any kind of disease or surgery or trauma can also cause erectile dysfunction. Injury to the spinal cord due to automobile accident or multiple sclerosis along with long term diabetes can cause ED. Banned drugs like Heroin, cocaine, marijuana and alcohol abuse cause ED. Alcohol mainly has deadly affects like nerve damage, lower testosterone levels, and atrophy of the testicles. Cigarette smoking is not only injurious to our lungs but also aggravates atherosclerosis.

Testosterone is the dominant hormone in males and is necessary not only to maintain the libido, but also to maintain the level of nitric oxide in the penis. Hypogonadism is a condition in which the testes function abnormally resulting in less production of testosterone. Many medicines cause erectile dysfunction as a side affect. Medications used for diabetes mellitus, hypertension, antidepressants, tranquilizers, appetite suppressors can cause ED. Medicine that have beta-blockers lead to ED, like digoxin, indomethacin, verapamil, lithium, propranolol, famotidine among others.

In this modern world, Stress and anxiety are part of life and if they cross the limit, depression steps in and creates havoc. Lower self-esteem, fear of sexual failure, guilt, Depression also causes erectile dysfunction. Today, as we advance into the future with more speed, our technological intelligence seems to give us possible solutions for abnormalities like erectile dysfunction, some of them being drugs for curing impotence and Viagra, Cialis and Levitra are some of the cures available today
