The abbreviation SCADA simply stands for the term known as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. This is greatly important in monitoring as well as controlling manufacturing, infrastructural and industrial systems. This technology performs through the existence of the integrated computer network that is placed inside industrial controls. Even if they are somehow complex, they make industrial technologies deliver their respective functions while rendering a variety of procedures for the company. SCADA can be used for a variety of functions ranging from radioactive waste disposal, nuclear power plant functioning and traffic light movements. These wide series of purposes lead to possible hacking of the technology thus resulting to a series of security problems. With this, improvement of the technology is then proposed. More on security problems for this technology Hacking is the more general term for the security problems in the technology but there are other subclassifications of problems that may actually come. Monitoring and connectivity issues are often seen to be problems as well. This takes place because of the many computers that are connected together to comprise the technology. This then leads to two subclassifications of damages. Deliberate damage is one of these two subclassifications of damages. This can affect the technology internally and externally. As the word implies, this means that a person deliberately damages the functioning of the SCADA. This act is typically associated with acts of terrorists who in one way or another have seen through manuals on how to attack the technology. As for the second class, there is the accidental damage. No matter how much people say that this is accidental in nature, it should not be ignored as it can cause damage to the technology. How to deal with these technology problems The main concentration here is to secure the technology. This should be made possible by guaranteeing that neither deliberate nor accidental damage will get into the institution. In this regard, there are two prescribed methods to be resorted to. These security measures are encryption and access control. Encryption is a SCADA security technique wherein a certain text is converted into a corresponding code. The codes are developed in such a manner that it will be complicated to decipher the accessibility to the technology. In supporting this safety technique, an enterprise should invest on technical and special types of software for the purpose. Access control on the other hand, is that security technique wherein not anybody or anything may just be allowed to access the technology. Simple methods such as fencing of the RTU units as well as complicated measures like coding of the technology may be adapted in this manner.
