South Africa : Variety at its Best

South Africa may seem like a small mark on your map. It lacks the vast spaces of Canada, the majestic pyramids of Egypt, and the "boat population" of Hong Kong. However, when it comes to variety, it seems to offer half of the world in one small package. Containing a wide variety of cultures, landscapes, climates, plant and animal life, action adventure, and about 1500 miles if seashore, you will probably run out of time before running out of options.

The diversity of all the cultures can be seen all over. The country has eleven official languages, and each of those represent a slice of the population. Each one of these, though having some similarities, has its own unique heritage, complete with customs, traditions, clothing, art, and habits. Although western technology and knowledge has had its impact on
the day to day life of the urban people, the african culture remains deep-rooted. The history of interactions and long forgotten wars between these groups make for some fascinating reading.

The wildlife is an incredible selection of animals. Mammals range from giraffes to tiny wild mice, with antelopes, apes,predators, and other unusual animals filling the space in between. The selection of birds include the ostrich, flamingo's, swallows, various eagles, the blue crane, and a few other unusual species. Even the selection of reptiles and
insects contain species found nowhere else on earth.

The scenery also offers a variety so wide that it justifies a holiday all by itself. On the one extreme you will find majestic mountains with breathtaking waterfalls. At the other end of the line you will find harsh desert landscapes, where only the toughest plants and animals can attempt to survive. The rest is a selection of all possibilities in between,
including forests, valleys, green and rocky hills, huge rivers and simple streams, rocky half-desert landscapes, and snow-capped mountains in winter time.

As for action, consider this : A range of options including mountaineering, scuba diving, hiking trails, hunting, fishing, and bungee jumping.

The possibilities are endless. A relatively weak currency makes it an affordable holiday destination. What you will find will have you return to uncover more. Many great explorers have returned to Africa again and again . It is your turn now.
